Hearing Loss takes various forms

Conductive Hearing Loss: When sound waves are not carried well anywhere through the outer ear canal, or the eardrum, or the tiny bones (ossicles) of the middle ear, conductive hearing loss can occur. A reduction in sound level or the ability to hear faint sounds may be an indication of conductive hearing loss. This type of hearing loss can often be corrected with medication or surgery.

Sensorineural Hearing Loss: If damage occurs to the inner ear (cochlea), or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain, the result could be sensorineural hearing loss or SNHL. Medicinal or surgical intervention cannot often correct sensorineural hearing loss. This is the most common form of permanent hearing loss experienced in the Tilbury area.

There are many possible symptoms associated with SNHL hearing loss. This may include reduced ability to hear faint sounds, or difficulty in following conversations when two or more people are talking.

Mixed Hearing Loss: A condition where both conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) occur simultaneously, is referred to as a ‘mixed hearing loss’. This is caused by concurrent damage in the outer or middle ear, and in the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve.
